Yokai 2

From the “Midday Shadow” series
Oil on canvas, 40 × 40 cm, 2026

In Yokai 2, Stefan Stoikov creates a striking tension between the delicate and the ominous. A monumental dark form occupies the centre of the composition, framed by pale, almost luminous brushwork and surrounded by a dense arrangement of flowers. Along the lighter surface, a fine-lined fantastical figure introduces a subtle reference to the world of yōkai—Japanese supernatural beings associated with the uncanny and unknown. The contrast between blooming flowers, soft pastel tones, and the deep central darkness gives the work an unsettling atmosphere, suggesting a threshold between the familiar natural world and something mysterious concealed beyond it.
