In Religion, Bela Macka presents a satirical reflection on a world in which everything has become a religion. From fitness, atheism, and cosmetic enhancement to drugs, sex, and technology, contemporary life is increasingly shaped by systems of belief, rituals, and objects of devotion. At the centre of the composition, a monumental stone becomes a shared focus of worship, surrounded by figures performing their own individual rituals. Macka suggests that the human need for faith and meaning extends far beyond organised religion, finding expression in everyday habits, ideologies, and consumer culture. Yet, as these new forms of devotion emerge, religion itself becomes a business, exposing the tension between genuine belief and commercial exploitation. The work ultimately questions what modern society worships, revealing how easily conviction can become obsession and almost any aspect of life can take on the authority of a god.
