In Presumption Backwards, Bela Macka depicts the human figure in a moment of suspended descent, falling backwards into an unseen space. The reversed orientation of the body produces an uneasy ambiguity: the figure appears almost to surrender himself to gravity, yet whether this gesture represents trust, recklessness, or defeat remains unresolved.

The work continues Macka’s engagement with the theological distinction between faith and presumption. Its conceptual foundation recalls the temptation of Christ, in which the Devil challenges Him to throw Himself from the Temple and rely upon the intervention of angels. The act would appear to demonstrate faith, yet its underlying impulse is one of presumption—to place God under obligation by deliberately creating a situation in which divine protection must be proven.

Here, the backwards fall becomes a visual metaphor for that contradiction. The figure seems to relinquish control, but genuine surrender and the expectation of being saved occupy an unsettlingly similar visual language. What appears to be an act of trust may instead be an act of pride: not trusting God, but testing whether God will catch you.

By withholding both the point of impact and any visible means of salvation, Macka leaves the figure suspended between faith and consequence. The viewer is therefore denied the certainty of knowing whether they are witnessing an act of surrender or the beginning of a fall.
