In Presumption, Bela Macka places the human figure within an ambiguous state of suspension, deliberately destabilising the distinction between flight and falling. The body appears weightless, yet its trajectory remains uncertain; liberation and catastrophe become visually indistinguishable. This ambiguity forms the central tension of the work, transforming a seemingly playful image into a meditation on faith, trust, and human perception.
The composition can be read through the theological narrative of Christ’s temptation, in which the Devil challenges Christ to cast Himself from the Temple, invoking the promise that angels will intervene. The temptation is not simply to fall, but to test divine protection—to demand evidence of God rather than place oneself in genuine faith. Macka's figure occupies precisely this uncertain space between belief and presumption.
The apparent sensation of flight therefore becomes an illusion of control. What may initially be perceived as freedom can equally be understood as a descent concealed by confidence. In this sense, the work examines the relationship between faith and pride, questioning whether surrender is an act of trust or whether the desire to be saved can itself become a form of testing.
Presumption ultimately leaves the viewer suspended alongside the figure, withholding the moment of impact and, with it, the certainty of whether we are witnessing transcendence or a fall.
